Participant Stories

Behind every statistic is a person whose life has been changed by evidence-based wellness programming. These stories represent the real-world impact of Grace Blanket programs on older adults in our community.

Note: The stories below are representative examples based on typical participant experiences. As Grace Blanket's network grows, we will feature real participant testimonials with their consent.

Margaret T.

Age 74San Diego, CA
A Matter of BalanceSunrise Wellness Studio
I used to be afraid to walk to the mailbox. Now I walk around the block every day.
Margaret came to Grace Blanket after a fall in her kitchen left her shaken and fearful. "I stopped doing things I loved," she says. "I wouldn't go to my granddaughter's soccer games because I was afraid of the uneven ground." After completing the 8-week A Matter of Balance program, Margaret reports feeling like a different person. "The program taught me that falls aren't inevitable. I learned how to assess risks and make changes—in my home and in how I move." Today, Margaret walks daily, attends her granddaughter's games, and has become an advocate for falls prevention in her senior living community.

Robert K.

Age 68La Mesa, CA
EnhanceFitnessCommunity Recreation Center
I never thought I'd look forward to exercise. Now I can't imagine my week without it.
Robert was diagnosed with pre-diabetes and told by his doctor to increase physical activity. "I tried the gym, but I felt out of place," he recalls. "Everything was designed for younger people." A friend mentioned the EnhanceFitness class at his local recreation center. "From day one, the instructor made me feel welcome. The exercises were challenging but doable, and everyone was supportive." After six months of three-times-weekly classes, Robert's A1C levels improved, he lost 15 pounds, and he's made lasting friendships with his classmates.

Helen M.

Age 81Chula Vista, CA
Tai Chi for ArthritisHarmony Wellness Center
Tai chi gave me back my independence. I can garden again, play with my great-grandchildren.
Helen has lived with arthritis for over 20 years. "Some days, the stiffness was so bad I couldn't open a jar or button my shirt," she says. "My daughter was worried about me living alone." Her doctor recommended Tai Chi for Arthritis after reading about its evidence for reducing pain and improving balance. "I was skeptical at first—I'm not a 'exercise person.' But the gentle movements felt good from the very first class." After completing the program and continuing with weekly practice, Helen reports significantly less pain and stiffness. "I'm not cured, but I'm managing. And I haven't fallen in over a year."
